We are very excited to read what Jarvis Cocker had to say about our workshops:
“The School of Noise is one of those ideas that you just KNOW is right: bringing back a sense of wonder & accessibility to music-making. Music is organised noise & organising noise is fun! Dan Mayfield manages to communicate this fact to all those he works with. I doff my cap to him” – Jarvis Cocker

We are going to be visiting Farmopolis on the 1st October to perform and record a live soundtrack as we turn a plank of wood into a bird box. The sawing, hammering, sanding and many other sounds will be captured then sculpted to create a piece of music. This workshop aims to inspire fledgling musicians to explore the possibilities of using different sound sources as well as trying out recording and bird box building techniques.
Here are a few photos from our recent night at The Social with Bowers & Wilkins. The aim of the evening was for anyone to come along and play on the range of sound making and sound sculpting devices we had out on the tables. People could listen to their own sounds on headphones and once they had a sound that they liked they fed it into the speaker system. Everyone was encouraged to improvise and perform the sounds together which created a fascinating long piece of improvised experimental electronic music throughout the night. As well as being the performers those who took part were also the audience members to the music.
On the last Monday in June, July and August we’ll be running special evening workshops for adults presented in association with Bowers and Wilkins and The Social
The nights aim to encourage the exploration of noise, sound and music in creative, enjoyable and educational ways. Run by a collective of musicians, sound artists and noise enthusiasts the SCHOOL of NOISE intends to help make experimental music increasingly accessible. There is no need to have experience playing music to take part in the workshops and they are open to people of all abilities.
The workshops will be hands on sessions with lots of things to try out, people on hand to help out and a relaxed atmosphere throughout – the bar will be open and serving!
The SCHOOL of NOISE have been invited to perform a live set at the Union Chapel on the 6th June at 12:00 as part of Daylight Music‘s summer season of events. All are welcome to come along and watch 10 children performing a set of experimental electronic music in one of London’s finest music venues. For more details please visit here
